Subject: [*] A La Carte 1.0.1; access to frequently used apps
Hello -
A La Carte is a nifty menu utility which is designed to help you open
frequently used applications, documents, and folders. A La Carte places a
menu near the balloon help menu which you can access from any application.
>From the menu, you can launch an application with or without an attached
document, or bring a folder to the front in a Finder window. The power of A
La Carte is that it automatically keeps track of recently used items, so
that your most recent work is readily accessible.
A La Carte is a System 7 Control Panel Device which has several
configuration options, online help and balloon help. A La Carte has been
tested extensively on a variety of 680x0 based Macintoshes. A La Carte is
shareware, if you like this utility we ask that you pay $20.
We hope you like it!

Subject: [*] Asterax 1.0->1.0.1 update (a game)
This archive contains only the application for Asterax 1.0.1,
which should fix the problems that owners of older Macs have been
having with memory and sounds.
The problems with multiple monitors persist, and will probably
not be fixed until after final exams.
Support has been added for any monitor size, several parameters
of the game have been changed, and a resource flag has been
added to deactivate the "fade-to-black" which has caused
problems for some people.
Asterax is a production of Arvandor Software.

Subject: [*] Asterax 1.0.1: shareware arcade game
Version 1.0.1 corrects the sound bug that made Asterax unplayable
on slightly older Macs, as well as correcting a number of other
misfeatures people pointed out. Multiple monitors still give
the program trouble, though; we apologize for that problem, and
will work on it when we can.
Asterax is a single- or multi-player arcade game for Macintosh computers,
growing out of the classic arcade game Asteroids(tm), but with new
strategic elements. Asterax makes use of many features of the modern Macintosh
system, including multiple screen sizes and 4-channel sound.
Features:
Classic arcade action with new strategic elements
Smooth animation on Motorola 680x0 and PowerPC processors
Full support for multiple monitor sizes -- allowing you to actually
use all of your monitor, whether you have a Color Classic or a 21"
multi-sync.
Four-channel sound support
Completely modeled and rendered 3-dimensional graphics
System Requirements:
A Macintosh computer with a Motorola 68020, 030, 040, or PowerPC 601
processor
System 7.0 system software or later
A monitor supporting 16 or 256 colors (multiple monitor support is
shaky right now)
At least 4 MB of available RAM -- Asterax has been tested on a 4 MB system
using Connectix RamDoubler(tm) without any problems.
Asterax has been successfully tested on machines ranging from a Duo 210 to
a IIvx to a Quadra 800, and all of the PowerMacs (as of May 8th, 1994...)
Asterax is a production of Arvandor Software;

BatteryMinder 1.2.2
BatteryMinder is a tiny program that helps you predict how much time you
have left on your PowerBook battery. It allows you to toggle Appletalk
and Sound with convenient buttons in its unobtrusive little window and is
smart enough to optionally turn Appletalk OFF when it is run and back ON
when quit. This makes Appletalk always load at startup if you put the
program into your Startup folder. Double-clicking BatteryMinder's window
puts your PowerBook to sleep.
BatteryMinder also has the added benefit of being entirely free!
* 1.2.2 - Now can toggle sound OFF at program quit. (My very own idea.)

Subject: [*] BBEdit 2.5.6 Updater; a text editor
The enclosed BinHex file contains a patcher and attendant files to
update version 2.5 through 2.5.5 of BBEdit to the current maintenance
release (version 2.5.6).
The new version fixes a couple of nasty bugs and a performance problem
that crept into the 2.5.5 release build, so all users of BBEdit 2.5
are encouraged to apply this patch. In addition, updated extensions
and ToolServer support scripts are included, as well as the complete
text of the press release which announces the planned release of
BBEdit 3.0.
The patcher cannot be used to update a demo, freeware, or beta version
of BBEdit. For details on obtaining a copy of BBEdit 2.5, send mail to
bbedit@world.std.com. (Now is a good time to get BBEdit 2.5; orders
filled between now and when BBEdit 3.0 ships will include a coupon for
a free upgrade to version 3.0.)
(Archive maintainers: This package supersedes any previously extant
BBEdit 2.5 patchers, but does -not- replace any demo or freeware
versions of BBEdit. You should make sure that you have the latest demo
and freeware packages; if in doubt, send mail to
bbedit@world.std.com.)

About this stack...
Each bird card records the common name, scientific name, and family of a bird
along with a list of sightings. Sightings are recorded by date, location, and
an optional comment. Birds are automatically indexed by common name,
scientific name, and year of sighting on the various list cards. A star after
a bird name in a year list indicates the first sighting of that species. A
query list allows you to produce a summary for any date or location. In any
alphabetical list, type the first few letters of a bird name to scroll to that
item. Click on any of the buttons on the left for more information on its
function. Enjoy!

CD Playthrough release notes
version: 1.0 <May 19, 1994>

introduction
CD Playthrough is a freeware program that allows you to set the Sound In
and Playthrough options effortlessly. At last, you can enjoy audio CD's
without an annoying and tedious trip to the Sound control panel.
Furthermore, CD Playthrough gives you the ability to dynamically switch
between any of three input sources with or without playthrough, at the
cost a few mouse clicks. This is extremely useful, even though the sound
settings are now saved between reboots (Power Macs after System Update
3.0), since playthrough is disabled everytime you quit Video Monitor or
FusionRecorder.
NOTE: you do *not* need an AV class or Power Macintosh to take advantage
of CD Playthrough, you do need Sound Manager 3.0 and the Sound control
panel must have the "Options..." button enabled in the Sound In pop-up.

In Canada, call (800) 361-6075.
This brand-new integrated business graphic application allows non-artists to
automatically create a wide variety of business graphics, including
organization charts, time lines, flow charts, data charts and calendars.
ClarisImpact's integrated word processing and presentation features allows
you to seamlessly combine these "smart" graphics into final presentations or
reports without resorting to multiple applications.
The added speed of this Power Macintosh version will allow you to take
advantage of Impact's more sophisticated color templates and graphics without
sacrificing performance.
Some of the features have been disabled in this version of the application.
You will not be able to save documents or copy objects to other applications
via the clipboard. However, cut, copy and paste will work within the
application.
Printing is available, but your printouts will have a watermark in the
background.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.1.4; formats and verifies floppies
Disk Charmer 2.1.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
Look for the Thread Manager on ftp.apple.com (130.43.2.3).
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
New from version 2.1.3:
Ejects the disk if it does not mount when you hold down the option key.
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Subject: [*] Folder Icon Cleaner 1.1.2; deletes custom folder icons
Folder Icon Cleaner is a small utility that lets you get rid
correctly of those space and time wasting custom icons, sticked
right there on your folders.
The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file.
The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not
delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only
delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other
information is kept into these "Icon" files. Folder Icon Cleaner
correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating
the "Use custom icon" attribute of the folder). No data is lost,
you only gain a little more free space on your disk.
You can even erase every custom folder icon on your disk.
Folder Icon Cleaner can only be used under System 7 or later;
however, it is rather useless on a System 6-or-older Macintosh.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
New in 1.1.2:
Maintenance release.

Subject: [*] Font Control 1.1.1; allows for better looking printed text
Font Control is a function key (FKEY). An FKEY is a little
program you can start up by pressing a Command-Shift-number
combination on your keyboard.
You really need this FKEY if you own a Imagewriter or a
StyleWriter, and would like to decently print texts.
The Apple drivers for these printers do not include a
"Fractional Widths" option, so the printed text is misaligned.
It lets you use TrueType typefaces even
if the corresponding bitmap fonts are available.
Moreover, you can avoid that ugly distortion (shrinking)
of characters (glyphs, to be more correct)
extending beyond the ascent and/or the descent line, such as
caps characters with accents, tildes, etc.
Read the enclosed note for a complete explanation about the
"Fractional Widths, Font Scaling & Preserve Glyphs" story.
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Subject: [*] Forward Delete 1.1.1; delete characters ahead of the cursor
Forward Delete is a small extension that lets you use that
mysterious key called forward delete, present on all Extended
Keyboards. Press this key to delete the character at the right
of the insertion point.
You can now obtain the same effect by pressing shift-delete
(this is useful on _any_ keyboard).
Moreover, it lets you delete words with the Apple-approved
combinations option-backspace and option-fwd del.
It works with every application using
TextEdit (if you do not know what TextEdit is, do not
worry: it is simply that part of the Mac Operating System which
manages basic text editing). Try it out with SimpleText or in
dialog boxes.
I have been using it since 1992 with no problems or
incompatibilities at all.
If you install this utility, you will find yourself using the
forward delete key more frequently, even in applications
which have always supported it!
Call it consistency between applications...
This works even on a Plus under System 4.3,
and (hopefully) under System 6 & 7 on any other Mac.
New in 1.1.1:
fix in the code drawing the icon at startup.

FRICTION 3.0.1
Friction Analysis- Block On an Inclined Surface
The Friction Analysis program analyzes a block on an inclined surface with
adjustable roughness, and provides various information about its status (i.e.
tipping or slipping) under the selected loading and surface conditions.
The program is interactive. The surface slope and roughness, block size, center
of gravity, point of application and direction of the force applied can all be
interactively changed with the aid of the mouse.
Analysis includes finding the point of contact of the block on the surface, the
numerical values for the normal and friction forces, magnitudes of the applied
force to cause impending motion, and the animation of the motion in the case of
tipping or sliding. This is done automatically whenever any parameter is
altered.
The demo version is restricted to the default slope inclination, hence the
"Open
Input File..." option is disabled as well. All other operations are fully
operational.
This application has a sharaware fee of $10. If you are interested please send
orders to the address above with your payment. Please include an e-mail
address

- spreadsheet style data entry
- Normal, Poisson, Binomial and Gamma models with appropriate links and
specification of convergence parameters
- Scatter and Residual plots
- Output of deviance, parameter estimates, residuals and parameter
correlations
- Saving of data files complete with all model specifications.
- printing of data, graph and results.
- Online Help (under the apple menu) unfortunately there is currently no
other documentation.
- includes example data files for most examples in two of the texts.
The programme is shareware with a very reasonable fee of $AUD30 for
individual copies or $AUD120 for site licences. ($1AUD is

By Hussam Dandashli

dandashl@mn.ecn.purdue.edu
Matrix Helper is an application to help with basic matrix operations like
inverting, row-reducing, solving a system of linear equations and more...
The application utilizes several features including
* dynamic memory allocation, allowing the user to enter a large matrix
depending
on the amount of RAM allocated to the application.
* Improved solver for a system of equations using Gauss-Jordan method with full
pivoting to handle ill-conditioned matrices.
* Ability to read/write large matrices that the application would not be able
to
display in the application's window.
* Display matrix in main and console windows, so the user can copy the numbers
as text right out of the visible part of the console window.
* Straight-forward user interface.
Version 1.1 fixes a minor bug that caused the determinant to be zero if some of
the diagonal numbers were very small. Other additions include three options to
view numbers, e.g. 3.20e-2 or 0.032 or 0.032000, and better console display.
This demo version is limited to 3x3 matrices. The full version is limited by
available RAM. It is shareware with a $10 fee. If interested send orders to

MemWin and KMemWin are tools for displaying free memory in the frontmost
application -- the first shows memory in bytes and the second shows it in
kilobytes (hence the K).
In both programs, the window always floats above all other programs and
windows, but can be hidden or shown by typing Cmd-Escape. On the other
hand, clicking in the Close Box will quit the program until the next
restart.
Both require the Text Services Manager of System 7.1 or later, so
if you dont have System 7.1 you are out of luck. Both are implemented
as System Extensions (actually background only programs), so place
whichever one you like into the Extensions folder.
Changes since 1.0:
Added a field to the listing. The "Rsrv" field that reflects
several types of memory: the stack, application globals, and
embedded heaps. This field rounds out the accounting to match
other memory display programs.
Clarified the difference between the Show/Hide and Quit
functions.
Thanks to John Stein for the new icon design. I touched it up,
but it was his idea and work.

source is available for implementing similar hacks if you are interested.

Menu Events 1.1.2
This system extension bridges the gap between scripting
applications and the vast number of non-scriptable
applications. It makes most, but not all, applications
controllable through their menu commands, using program
linking (Apple events).
Any script, or any program equipped to send Menu events, can
query and execute the menu commands of any compatible
application on any Macintosh on the network.
Version 1.1.1 added an AppleScript scripting addition ('osax')
and a sample script that shows you how to control an application
through its menus.
Version 1.1.2 adds support for script recording by making
applications send Menu events to themselves. You can now
record menu selection actions directly into scripts!

PlainText 1.29a fixes a bug in version 1.28 that caused crashes while
zooming windows on SEs, MacPluses, PB100s and a few other machines that
are designed to use multiple monitors.
PlainText is a free text editor that is small and fast. It's feature-set
has been limited to those features I have found useful in many years of
experience with a number of commercial and share-ware editors. Most
importantly, PlainText has automatic word wrap and no 32K limit. Other
features are bookmarks and better than standard search and replace. You
can use PlainText to insert or remove hard carriage returns, convert
between Unix, MS/DOS, and Mac end-of-line conventions, convert between
straight and curly quotes, etc. Granted, the big, full-featured editors,
like Pete Keleher's Alpha and BBEdit, by Rich Siegel, have these features,
plus many more. PlainText incorporates a subset in a small, simple, and
fast editor. PlainText even incorporates a few operating system commands
in a command-line interface.
PlainText requires System 6.0.5 or greater and is System 7 saavy.
This is version 1.2.9a. Users of version 1.2.8, or any other previous
versions should switch to this one in order to take advantage of the many
enhancements and a few bug fixes. Version 1.3 is in the works. It's major
change will be a modeless search and replace dialog.

Do to popular request, you can edit the alert message Printer Patrol
sends you. You need a resource editor such as ResEdit and some bravery
to change it, but if you have both you can edit the STR resource -4064 to
something else.
What does Printer Patrol do, you ask? Good question. Printer Patrol is
a control panel which allows you to set up a list of your frequently used
printers. If you print to one of these printers, Printer Patrol does
nothing. If you try to print to a different printer, Printer Patrol puts
up a simple alert pointing out that fact. That way you can change to the
printer you really want if you've made a mistake. Everything is pretty
bare bones, but the Printer Patrol control panel does support Balloon
Help in case you can't figure it out for yourself.

Subject: [*] sAVe the Disk 1.4; remedies AV Mac Enabler deficiencies
May 22, 1994
The enclosed file is a bin-hexed/compact-pro archive.
I am the author of this FreeWare system extension,
which I call "sAVe the Disk".
This file contains version 1.4 of sAVe the Disk which
supersedes the previous versions 1.3.x.
sAVe the Disk 1.4 fixes three deficiencies of the AV Macs:
It speeds up certain Resource Manager operations, improves
performance of the disk cache built into the system and
prevents extra disk activity before and after sounds are
played.
sAVe the Disk works on Centris/Quadra 660av and Quadra 840av.
It requires System 7.1 and version 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 of the
System Enabler 088.
Although sAVe the Disk has not caused me any trouble I'm not
responsible for any (unlikely) problems you may experience.
This updated version works smoothly with the latest 1.2 Enabler
and includes my new Internet address. Several other minor fixes
and improvements over sAVe 1.3.1.
Best regards,
Michael Thies. (thiesana@uni-paderborn.de)

Serenity is a simple application launcher, suitable for small children

a window with up to twenty configurable buttons. Each button may be
used to launch an application, desk accessory or document, and can be
configured to automatically perform functions such as speaker volume
adjustment, monitor depth adjustment, and application hiding.
Serenity temporarily replaces the Finder, in order to help prevent
accidental damage to your system. Elementary password protection is
provided. Serenity is not a security tool, however, and will not
prevent a determined user from accessing your system.
Also included in the Serenity package are Serenity Extension(tm) and
Serenity Module(tm), which may be used with either After Dark or DarkSide
of the Mac to automatically launch Serenity when your computer is idle.
Serenity requires System 7 or later. Serenity is 32-bit compatible,
requires less than 30K of disk space, and uses just 100K of RAM when running.
Serenity Extension is a background application that requires approximately
5K of disk space and uses 20K of RAM. Serenity Module is an After Dark fader
that requires approximately 2K of disk space.

Tiggr's Clock 1.2, for After Dark
A friend of mine, called Tiggr <tiggr@tnt.es.ele.tue.nl>, originally
wrote this rather nice clock for his NeXT machine. So he deserves the
creative credit. This clock is an arc ranging from the hour-hand to
the minute-hand. I didn't look into Tiggr's source, but I figure that
with Display PostScript the code was much neater that mine, I use
Regions to create smooth drawing (instead of off-screen drawing) which
results in a nice "Multiple" colour effect.
I contribute this module to Lloyd Wood, if it wasn't for him, I would
have left my compiler alone today...
Anyways, have fun! This is freeware.
pooh@stack.urc.tue.nl
1.2:
* Made the maximum clock size fixed to prevent possible memory problems
on very large screens.
* Decreased the amount of memory needed.
* Added a "one single" colour option.
* Randomised the initial direction and colour.
* The hour and minute hands now move every second, like any real clock
would.
* Removed -by request of Tiggr himself- the second-hand.
* Changed move options to "Not at all", "Once per second" or
"Continuously". The latter is only really useful on faster susyems.

TRUSS 5.0
TRUSS ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION
by Hussam Dandashli
Truss Analysis and Visualization is a program for the force analysis of planar
trusses and the visualizations of the results. System requirements to run this
application-
- 32Bit Color QuickDraw installed,
- math co-processor (if using the FPU version).
This version is a complete remake of version 4.2. It has a new user interface
to implement more useful ways to design and analyze a truss.
Some of the features implemented cover-
* Create a new truss design,
* Alter the geometry of an existing truss design interactively through moving
joint locations or by the addition/removal of truss members, truss supports or
truss joints,
* Apply loads on a truss,
* Produce free body diagrams of the entire truss or for selected pins,
* Produce a color (pattern) graphical display of the load distribution in the
individual members with the color (and pattern) of the members denoting
tension or compression showing the relative magnitude of the load,
* Button shortcuts to implement common operations without extensive menu
access.
* Implement Method of Sections and Method of Joints interactively,
* Create QuickTime movies of a car traveling over the truss.
The demo version is fully enabled for 4 nodes only. The full version is
limited
by memory available.

Hello all,
A friend recently purchased a 660AV and now wants a Fax Modem.
He want one that can wake up the Mac when the modem recieves an

a scan through some magazine back issues I can't find any.
He would have the option of using a geoport adaptor pod, but
Apple UK can't confirm when they will be shipped in the UK, or
whether the geoport pod can wake up a Mac when it is shutdown.
It would be usefull to get some idea of prices, and the capabilities
of the Fax Modem software supplied with the hardware - does it include
OCR capability?
Many Thanks In Advance.

PS Some late info. I understand that PSI Comstation modems can do this

Is this a software problem or hardware? Do I need more RAM? More VRAM?
I'm using the pause feature on a camcorder as the video source. Could that

While I agree with what Andrew advises, after I installed System Update 3.0 on
my Centris 650 running 7.1, MicroMat's MacEKG v2.0.6x started acting weird. It
no longer shows the "Model Average" bar graph in the next to last screen and in
the last screen it screams "Machine File Missing" (when the sexy voice is
working, it really does scream) and there is no history of previous runs and
their vertical bars. I reinstalled MacEKG with no improvement or change. When I
run the pre-update system I (wisely!) backedup, MacEKG executes as expected. So
I agree with dcolores@tecnet1.jcte.jcs.mil: There is an undocumented feature in
System Update 3.0 (or MacEKG v2.0.6x?)!

>haven't tested it extensively, and it is limited to mounting one image at a

MungeImage was written as a direct result of all the MountImage news that
has been flooding the net. Peter Lewis & Quinn stayed up all night and
slammed it out. It doesn't have any of the bugs MountImage does, although
it may have some of it's own which haven't shown up yet, but it certainly
appears solid. It _can_ open more than one image though. You just need to
drop them all on it at once when no images are mounted.
It's only real flaw, IMHO, is that you can't run Apple's installers from
the munged images. You see, the installer wants to quit all apps which
would involve quitting MungeImage, but it has open files on the disk, so it
won't quit and therefore it's a catch-22. My advice is, don't try this at
home kids.
Since MungeImage comes with source, it should be relatively simple for
someone to hack it up into an INIT which uses Gestalt to communicate with
the app and make persistant images, completely replacing MountImage.
So, whoever has the time and inclination, go for it.

I checked, and the Installer does not install such an extension. Has anyone

I have a lot of small chunks of text (notes on this and that, cookbooks,

indices.
Is there a Mac application which does this well? It would need simple
word processing capability, and also 'index management' --- ability to
view 'card' titles, re-order them, delete, create, search etc. Ideally
it should allow hierarchical arrangement of cards.
I've seen NotePad++ and FlashWrite, both nice, but neither has good
index management --- if you had 250 separate texts (no problem in a card
index), you would have trouble quickly skimming through the titles,
ordering half of the alphabetically, moving some into a 'sub-directory'
etc (all very natural things to do).

Is this a regular handset, or is it for the PBX? If the former, then you've
got a problem with the phone system, not necessarily with the GeoPort. If
the latter, then it doesn't bear on the problem, really.

I can verify that if a standard, non-PBX phone handset won't work on your
lines that the GeoPort won't work either. You'll have to have someone wire
in a regular outlet. That is what we had to do here in my office for our
modems. Our PBX Comdial phones use all six of the RJ-11 leads so it
required a trip from someone from the Utilities Department to wire a
regular two-lead jack. The GeoPort, like any other regular modem, uses only
two leads.
Once that is done, you can use the GeoPoop [sic] modem, or any modem for
that matter. Your dialing sequence will need to include an "8," to aquire
an outside line. For incoming calls you'll need to set register S0=0, 1, or
2 so that the modem will pick up before the voice mail does.

Interesting. Yesterday, I received an assurance from someone else (that I,

MungeImage was NEW code written precisely as an alternative to MountImage.

I just went through this with an 18-month-old pb100, also used almost

After much phoning around I fond replacement batteries from Dynamic

When I RTFM, I found both types of battery are said to last 'about a year'.
Now, I wonder if my 'VISA Gold Card' purchase which doubles manufacturers'
warranties extends to battery life? Guess I'll see ...

>CD-ROM-based games?
I have not bought this drive yet, but I have done some research into
it. As usual, the software that comes with the hardware is at least as
important as the hardware itself.
In this case, the driver that comes with this drive is a unique program
contracted out by MacWarehouse to some consulting firm of which I have
never heard. I couldn't get MacWarehouse to tell me what disk formats
the driver supports, even though I asked them directly, so I have to
assume the worst case -- that it only supports Macintosh HFS and Kodak
PhotoCD. I need software that will read ISO-9660 and DOS disks, and
possibly High Sierra disks as well, if that's any different from the
other two. (I suspect it might just be another name for one of them.)
So I asked if the MacWarehouse drive could be driven by the Apple CD
ROM driver, which supports those disk formats, and the answer is no, it
can't. So finally I asked what the internal mechanism in the drive is,
and they were able to tell me that.
I used that information in a call to FWB, who make the highly regarded
CD ROM Toolkit, a replacement CD ROM driver and software-based
accelerator, and they told me that yes, their product does work with
this mechanism *and* it supports all of the disk formats I need it to
support. CD ROM Toolkit is around $40 from MacWarehouse. So, to be safe,
I'd call the cost of this drive $240, because I wouldn't get it without
CD ROM Toolkit.

Subject: Q650 First Impression
Folk, I realize I'm being a bit retro here. I just replaced my aged,
one might say antedeluvian, office Mac IIcx with a Q650. I've been on
the bleeding edge of Mac technology so often that this time all I wanted
was a midrange computer with ROMs built in this decade.
The beast that arrived today has good and foul points. I hate its lack
of an external drive port. But I knew that from last year's C650 for
Leslye, so I can't say I am surprised. I still think it is stupid.
I love that its internal CD-ROM drive doesn't require a carrier. Just
pop the disc into the tray. Gee, how long has it taken for computer
vendors to catch up with audio CD types?
Back to hate. The non-auto-inject floppy drive would be a nuisance even
if it worked properly. It is a bore to have to remember to push the disk
all the way in, instead of inserting it most of the way and having the
drive grab it and continue the insertion. Heck, if that was all I had to
do, I could live with that. But ejecting a floppy doesn't quite. Not all
the time. Or even most of the time today. The sumbitch ejects just a hair
above the opening in the Q650's case. As in it doesn't. I must reach in
with a finger and push the disk down a tad to get actual ejection. That
certainly never occurred with what I call "real" Mac floppy drives.
I dunno about y'all, but I'm disappointed. Mostly because of the dumb
floppy drive that'd be a bore even if it worked right.

I can't offer any insights into causes or cures, but I can assure you that
the problem you cite exists in other environments than your
660av/GeoPort/MacSLIP setup. I call a commercial service provider on a
SupraFAX 14.4 modem running on a Mac IIci using MacTCP 2.0.4 and InterSLIP
1.0fc3, and I experience exactly the symptom you describe, also "quite
often."
The only solution I have found is to disconnect and re-dial. Unfortunately,
I don't discover that my SLIP connection is lost (the modem still maintains
the carrier) until I try to connect with my mail or news server or a remote
site. Even then, (since some delays in establishing connections are
legitimate) I am forced to wait out the timeout (in whatever utility
program I am using to request the server or remote connection) before
concluding that my SLIP connection is indeed lost.
I have given up, for the moment, on maintaining a consistently reliable
SLIP connection, and would be now be greatful just for a utility that would
give me a visual indicator or some other sign (in something like real time)
that my SLIP connection has indeed gone out. As long as my modem maintains
carrier the meter is running, and I am getting tired of wasting all this
connect time.

I highly recomment MungeImage 1.0.1 an app which serves a similar purpose.
It does everything that I have told it to do perfectly, with no corruption
(I installed SU 3.0 w/ no problems). Thank you, authors. It's only ~20K.
Many thumbs up.

I would also be extremely interested in this. If anyone finds it, I would
be very appreciative if they would make sure they also send it to the list.

Subject: Various things continued
Hello again, everyone
Well, here are the miscellaneous things which I have forgotten to mention
(I think that I'm up to 5):
5. About thread manager. I just wanted to use thread manager because I have
heard that it will make Nuntius run faster. So, upon ariving at apple.com,
I found one of those monster apple downloads (though, thankfully, not a
disk image) I am not a programmer, and "I am not a crook." So upon
downloading the monster, I deleted what seemed to be for programmers only.
Assuming that I didn't delete anything I needed, I was left with less than
50K. Why doesn't apple post a 50K non-developer version? I don't know.
6. Aparently,
>MRCNEXT.CSO.UIUC.EDU
> is now mirroring
>SUMEX-AIM.STANFORD.EDU
>in
>/pub/info-mac
This is from a usenet post. It's really neat. It doesn't seem too busy at
all. Does everybody else know about this?
7. System Update 3.0 is great. It speeds things up, the o/s dialog box
icons are nice. I like SimpleTest (although it's kinda a stupid name).
8. I have sent requests for the best client software before. The new
standard I'm looking for is WAIS. What is the best WAIS client. This would
be much appreciated.
9. I use Nuntius to access usenet. Usually I leave MacSLIP pinging so that
my connection will stay active if I step away from the computer. However,
whenever I load up Nuntius, I get the message "There is Not Enough Memory
to Keep MacSLIP Active at This Time. Close Windows or Quit Applications..."
Does Nuntius have some feature with the same effects as Fetch's "Keep
Connection Active?
Thanks for continuing to listen
I would appreciate any responses, via e-mail or post.
If I get e-mail responses I will try to post them to the list

Subject: Various things part #3
Hello, everyone
Two things:
1. How does one go about extracting binaries using Nuntius (1.2) In the
alt.binaries groups, most of the files seem to be in multiple parts.
Everything which I tried (using the extract binaries command) came out
corrupted. Please help me!
2. Something funny happened on the way to the forum. I was at a friends
house, who has Norton Utilities 2.0. KeyFinder was on the screen, at
Geneva, and there was a character which looked somewhat like a rabbit. When
I clicked on the box, the resulting character was what appeared to be a
lamb. The character is typed Option U, Shift Y. Hex: D9. Decimal: 217. Oct:
331. Fooling around at home, I found that the character is a Y with 2 dots
over it =8D in every other font as well as in Geneva except for 9 and 12 pt.
In 9 pt. it is a lamb. In 12 pt. it is a rabbit. Does anyone know the story
behind this?
Thanks for listning.
